JOURNAL FOR SATURDAY 31ST DECEMBER, 2022
______________________________________________________________________________

SUBJECT: Another year of WolfMUD development
   DATE: Sat 31 Dec 17:49:48 GMT 2022

Another year of WolfMUD development has been and gone. This year we still had
coronavirus lurking around and the cost of living crisis to deal with as best
as we could.

This year saw 6 WolfMUD releases: v0.0.19-beta4, v0.0.19-beta5, v0.0.19-beta6,
v0.0.19, v0.0.20 and v0.0.21. The journal saw 51 posts — three more than last
year :)

The code has seen 223 individual commits. The v0.0.19 release saw the end of a
year long 90% rewrite of the codebase. The v0.0.20 release introduced a basic
combat system and a reworking of the terminal handling. The v0.0.21 release
was the big combat release with better armour, weapons and combat actions.

Quite an active year, but there was more to come…

At the end of July I started work on my own programming language Mere. Over
the four months I spent working on it there were 4 releases and over 150
commits made. Work is still ongoing with v0.0.5 being almost a rewrite.

I still want to use Mere for scripting in WolfMUD and I have other uses for
the language as well.

Some big ticket items for WolfMUD are still outstanding, in no particular
order: skills, shops and traders, monetary currency, crafting, player housing
and quests — all the fun stuff :)

At the moment I’m implementing an in-game help system for players. The code is
complete and in the public dev branch. By default it’s not enabled yet as I
now need to write all of the help texts :/

Due to the cost of living crisis, the home lab has seen little love. I still
have my 4Gb Raspberry Pi 4 running the lab after the server died in May. The
Pi did receive a nice RTC (real time clock) upgrade :)

I have not been able to source a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W for the lab yet. I’d
also like to add a RISC-V based board for the lab as well. I did get a new
webcam for work — a simple Logitech C920 Pro I knew was going to “just work”
with Linux.

Happy new year everyone!
