Up to Main Index Up to Journal for May, 2014 JOURNAL FOR WEDNESDAY 7TH MAY, 2014 ______________________________________________________________________________ SUBJECT: Grovelling in mud DATE: Wed 7 May 22:27:06 BST 2014 I came across an article by Peter Welch entitled Programming Sucks[1]. It cheered me up in a sad and inevitable kind of way. Especially this sentence: All programmers are forcing their brains to do things brains were never meant to do in a situation they can never make better, ten to fifteen hours a day, five to seven days a week, and every one of them is slowly going mad. Oh, so true. As I didn't post a journal entry last week, what happened? Wednesday and Thursday I worked on the code trying to finish the clean up as planned[2] for PROTOTYPE3. The coming weekend was a long one with Monday being a bank holiday. My intent had been to finish the clean up and spend the long weekend packaging the code for release. I should know better than to make plans. Something always happens to bugger them up, every single time. Why should this plan be any different? It wasn't... I did write a lot about what happened over the weekend. Then I deleted it all. Suffice to say there was one straw on the camel's back too many. I needed some quiet time to switch off the brain for a while. So I mowed lawns on Sunday afternoon and then spent Sunday evening and Monday afternoon and evening on my knees grovelling in the mud, meticulously weeding some crazy paving in the garden. Beautifully mind numbing and just what I needed. Last night driving home late from work, as usual, I put my foot on the break peddle and it wouldn't go down properly and the car didn't slow. Hit the peddle harder and one of the front break pads disintegrated. It's just one damn thing after another... Oh, and we ran out of coffee at work yesterday. *sigh* -- Diddymus [1] Peter Welch's article: https://stilldrinking.org/programming-sucks [2] See ../4/25.html Up to Main Index Up to Journal for May, 2014
