Up to Main Index Up to Journal for July, 2013 JOURNAL FOR WEDNESDAY 10TH JULY, 2013 ______________________________________________________________________________ SUBJECT: I'm melting! melting! Oh, what a world! [1] DATE: Wed 10 Jul 23:26:31 BST 2013 I don't get on well with hot weather. I'm OK up to about 22-23°C but above that I tend to get very dopey and tired. Since the weekend it's been 26-29°C. Is this an excuse just to say nothing much has been happening to WolfMUD? Nope! I'm a night owl and it's been cooling down in the evenings. Only to 17-20°C so trying to sleep is a pain, which wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have trouble getting up in the morning for work[2]. So hows it been going with the code? Apart from a gazillion rewrites due to cyclic imports and other catch-22 issues it's ... OK. In fact I just managed a proper login with two players: Diddymus and Tass[3]. Although the player files that were loaded were hand written. It's also possible to login multiple times with the same player as I have not done the checking to prevent it yet. I need to do some clean up from where I have been trying different approaches. There is also the RecordJar writer to implement as well. I'll probably do the cleanup first so that those that don't mind creating player files manually can have some fun ;) What else was I going to say? Oh yes. I'm probably going to drop the changes I added for crowds. It's nice to be able to support thousands of players but is it really practical? For huge numbers of players you need a huge world and if you have a huge world how are you going to find other players? [4] Lastly what the fsck is up with Google recently? Hangouts, YouTube, Gmail and Groups all seem *really* flaky - even when running the latest Chrome browser. -- Diddymus [1] The Wizard of Oz, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (1939) [2] I have 3 alarms going off plus a radio alarm clock plus my wife giving me a dig and leaving a coffee - she leaves for work early - and I can still sleep through all of it if I'm not careful. Coffee always gets cold :( [3] Yes, as in Tasslehoff Burrfoot from the Dragonlance books which were very popular around 1984-5 and I've used it ever since as a backup/2nd character :) [4] This is a conclusion I came to after reading 'The Decline of MMOs' by Richard Bartle.
